30 Oct 2020 – Inside~Out, the second annual exhibition of outdoor design curated by Kin & Company (Brooklyn-based design studio), premiers 40+ new works from emerging and established independent designers. Originally conceived as an interactive design show highlighting social engagement, the 2020 works are instead presented virtually within otherworldly landscapes created by Duyi Han.
In the absence of their human counterparts, the virtual works, ranging from functional to conceptual, take on an ephemeral perspective. The pandemic has isolated us from each other, asking us to reconsider the meaning of connection and community, and forcing us all to re-envision the role of design today, tomorrow and for the months to come.
Nine scenes
An analysis of this show’s theme and the ever-changing difficult context of our current times informed Duyi Han to design a series of scenes about direct perception and emotion, without elusive symbolism or verbal narrative. From dark to bright, bleak to lush, solemn to lively, the designers’ furniture pieces take a journey through self-morphing landscapes. With tactile details and a fresh atmosphere, these landscapes comfort the sensory-deprived us, while they are also a subconscious escape that their emptiness and vastness seem as if only possible in a dream. Physical and mental pain and fear that we face in reality influence us to see the world in a realist way, while our inner desire for restoration and healing pulls us to hope and imagine. Therefore, Duyi Han’s aesthetic choice for this scenography is based on a play between early 19th century’s paintings in Realism and Romanticism, while also taking stylistic ingredients from contemporary photography, cinematography, and tourism.
